Education

Change starts with children. Education promotes gender equality, and is a sustainable factor in the growth and development.

Douglas College

A successful field learning experience for Douglas College nursing students was completed in May 2023 and May 2024. Our students fell in love with Frankadua, Ghana, like Leisha and I did. We were able to witness these students' growth over 17 days. It takes years to build confidence, comfort, connection to people, and strength to be vulnerable as a nurse, and these students accomplished this in those 17 days. We were busy every morning until night. Our students did wound care in villages in and around Frankadua, malaria testing, medical outreach, childcare, sports, teaching, and labor support.  Our third Douglas College nursing field learning experience will commence in May 2025.

Supporting education locally with the help of the Douglas College Foundation, we can support nursing education by providing bursaries for BSN nursing students attending Douglas College.

New Westminster Secondary

We continue to support education locally by providing a bursary for a current student in the Inclusive Education program attending New Westminster Secondary

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Project Esperanza runs a school that primarily serves the Haitian refugees and immigrant population of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, in the areas of education, social and community development. We continue to sponsor children in this community so that they can attend school.

We taught all levels of students, and were able to do some first aid training with the older students as well as a dissection of a goats heart for a Science class.

Nairobi, Kenya

San Jose, Costa Rica

In 2019, a volunteer trip led Jaxson and Tonya to the marginalized and low income communities in Costa Rica, where they taught English to primary school children.

Frankadua, Ghana

Douglas College nursing students were able to teach at a local primary and high school in Frankadua.
